High voter turnout in HK polls after 10-day protest

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong voters thronged the polls on Sunday, many fuelled by anti-China sentiment, to vote for a new legislature, in a sign of more problems ahead for the city's new Beijing-backed leader Leung Chun-ying.

About 53 percent of 3.4 million registered voters cast their ballots - up from 45.2 percent in the last election in 2008 - a day after Leung backed down from a plan for compulsory patriotic Chinese education in schools, a policy that drew tens of thousands of people to a 10-day protest.

Results are expected to start trickling in from 6 a.m. on Monday (2200 GMT on Sunday) until around midday.

Although the outcome will not change Leung's policy position, high voter turnout is likely to benefit the opposition pro-democracy camp and make it more difficult for him to pass measures in a fractious legislature during his five-year term.

"The national education issue antagonized many parents, so many of them came out to vote," said Lingnan University politics professor Li Pang-kwong, referring to the patriotism classes that protesters described as Communist Party propaganda aimed at indoctrinating children.

"It is also because of dissatisfaction with the performance of the Hong Kong government and emergence of a strong Hong Kong identify due to unhappiness with having to compete with new settlers and tourists from mainland China for housing, transport, hospital beds and so on," Li said.

TEST

Hong Kong, which returned to China in 1997 after more than 150 years of British rule, enjoys a high degree of autonomy. But Beijing has resisted public pressure for full democracy and has maintained strong influence in political, media and academic spheres.

Since taking office in July, Leung has been fire-fighting a string of China-linked controversies including dizzyingly high property prices and overcrowding in hospitals that locals blame on new migrants and visitors from mainland China.

Sunday's polls are a test of public support for Leung and his pro-Beijing allies on the one hand, and the opposition pro-democracy camp on the other, which is seeking to maintain its one-third majority to give it veto power over policies. Voters were electing just over half the seats in the 70-member chamber.

In 2003, a demonstration by half a million people against Hong Kong's first China-backed leader, Tung Chee-hwa, led to the scrapping of a controversial anti-subversion bill and his resignation midway into his second five-year term in 2005.

Aside from anger over mass Chinese tourism, an influx of mainland mothers giving birth in the city and the national education plan, economic issues were important for voters.

"I vote for people who can help us the most," said Anthony Tsang, a deliveryman voting at a rural polling station in a sleepy offshore island. "I care about livelihood, housing costs, wages and medical care."

Marshall delivers in Bears debut

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) ? Brandon Marshall insisted it's a new day. The way he connected with Jay Cutler, it sure seemed like old times.

The Pro Bowl receiver got off to a good start with his new team and his old quarterback, coming through with an explosive performance for the Chicago Bears in their 41-21 season-opening victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Marshall caught nine passes for 119 yards with a touchdown. Cutler threw for 333 yards with two TDs, and the Bears spoiled No. 1 draft pick Andrew Luck's debut with the Colts.

"We're trying to build a new thing here in Chicago," Marshall said. "It's going to take a lot of hard work. It was a great start."

To many, it seemed like the duo picked up where they left off. They put up huge numbers during their three seasons together in Denver, and with Marshall now in the mix after that blockbuster trade with Miami, Cutler finally has a true No. 1 target with the Bears.

The early results? Well, they were as advertised.

"It was fun to watch," defensive end Julius Peppers said. "Hopefully, that's a sign of things that are going to happen all year."

Cutler shook off a slow start, and the Bears racked up 428 yards on the way to their highest point total since they scored 48 in a win over Detroit in 2009. A big reason ? Marshall.

Maybe the Packers will have better luck when the Bears visit Green Bay on Thursday night. Then again, their revamped defense got a harsh reality check in a 30-22 loss to San Francisco, and there are some questions in the secondary even with Tramon Williams at cornerback, so they might have trouble finding some answers.

The Colts certainly did.

Whether he was double-teamed or in single coverage, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Marshall made plays. And even the touchdown, a simple 3-yarder to give Chicago a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter, was impressive.

He drove Vontae Davis, his teammate in Miami last season, off the ball with a quick spin and caught a bullet from Cutler.

"Went in, turned around," Marshall said. "Jay threw it, caught it, touchdown."

There. Simple.

The offense made it look that way once it got going, and the Bears believe there's more to come. They believe the system is better tailored to the personnel now that Mike Tice is the coordinator, and they believe they have the pieces to make it work.

And it's not just about Matt Forte carrying the ball or Cutler firing to Marshall. It just starts there.

"I know Jay spreads it out, but he definitely takes advantage of the matchups," Marshall said. "This league is all about matchups. Today, it just happened to be a wheelbarrow for me. But next week, it might be a shot glass."

Cutler used his arm strength to zip passes between two defenders or throw the ball up high in a crowd because Marshall would find a way to get it. It's a weapon he hasn't had since Denver traded him to Chicago.

It's no surprise that 15 of the 35 passes Cutler threw were to Marshall, but the other receivers had chances, too.

There was rookie Alshon Jeffery hauling in a 42-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone on a perfect high arching pass that sailed about 60 yards late in the game.

Devin Hester had a 29-yard catch. Earl Bennett had a 25-yarder. But it was Marshall stealing the show.

Cutler said the Colts "weren't really scared of him," that they were "going to let him make plays" and try to stop the run. Would he be surprised if teams are scared of Marshall after this?

"You have Alshon (Jeffrey) catching touchdowns, Earl (Bennett) catching 60-70 yards," Cutler said. "Matt Forte. Devin Hester so we have a lot of weapons. You kind of have to pick what you're going to do. Going forward, mixing it up on defense and giving us a lot of coverages, different fronts, blitzing us is probably what we're going to see."

Notes: Coach Lovie Smith sounded optimistic Monday that CB Charles Tillman will return this week after leaving the opener with an injury to his lower right leg. Asked if he expects Tillman to be ready, Smith said, "Yes I do. The glass is half-full, always. So yes." Smith said the Bears would have held him out along with LB Brian Urlacher had there been practice on Monday. Kyle Adams (shoulder) and J'Marcus Webb (thumb) were also banged up.

News and Society -Crime News Blog: Blood of Nigerian Christians ...

No time in the history of Nigeria has the church faced the level of persecution it is currently going through. For about 2 years now, hundreds of Christians have been killed and tens of churches destroyed. Sometimes, they are killed while in church services. The Islamic sect called Boko Haram has always claimed responsibility for all these attacks. Just last week, the Deeper Christian Life Church in Okene, Kogi State was attacked and about 20 worshippers were gunned down right in the church service. Many others who had various degrees of gun shot injuries are still lying in the hospital. Last Christmas the Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State was bombed leaving scores of worshipers dead or maimed. The same day another church was bombed in Bauchi.

Few months ago, two churches in Bayero University Kano were attacked. Many worshippers including university professors lost their lives. Just last month, about 50 people (including women and children) who took refuge in a church were smoked out and shot. The attackers first set the church building ablaze, then stood at the entrance and were shooting these innocent women, children and old people as they tried to escape from the furnace and smoke. And we have since lost the count of the churches that have either been bombed or attacked by gunmen in Yobe, Gombe, Plateau, Kano, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna and Kogi states. All in the north.

But this is not the first time the church is passing through such persecutions in the northern part of country. The differences with the present are the spate, degree and coordination of the attacks. Before now, any riot or demonstration in this part of the country will always end up in killing Christians and people from other regions. Thousands has gone this way. Amongst so many, is the case of Gideon Akaluka; who was beheaded and his head used to make show round the market. What of the young Yoruba female teacher who was slaughtered in Gombe with the flimsy excuse that she touched the Koran as she tried to stop her students from cheating in an examination. She put a call through to her husband as she saw the attackers, but could not finish before they lynched her. Her little baby was saved by good Samaritans who jumped the fence of the school to rescue him. And these are just few cases that space will allow us to pen down here.

But who is responsible for all these atrocities against Christians and humanity? What crime has the church committed? Are these executions and destruction accidental or a part of the larger plan to get rid of Christians in Nigeria? Is the current onslaught an expression of frustration by those who boasted that they will forcefully impose their belief from the desert to the sea? Has the very rapid, phenomenal and constant growth and prosperity of the church in the country, which has made nonsense of the plot and expectations angered them, hence, their resort to declaring war against the people of God?

Now, the Christians have paid enough for the peaceful co-existence of the country called Nigeria. The whole land is saturated by the blood of these innocent women, children and men whose only crime is what they believe in a secular nation that is supposed to be ruled by a constitution that has guaranteed freedom of worship and association. With the current resurgence of attacks, we urgently call on the federal government and the security agencies to step up the efforts to stop these onslaughts, unmask those behind it and bring them to book. The government, the Inspector-General of police, the army and other security agencies should see that the churches and Christians are well protected from the current unwarranted destruction. Security protection should immediately be sent to all these endangered places of worship, especially in the northern part of the country. The government must not continue to watch the citizens being slain for frivolous, dubious and satanic religious and political reasons. Enough is enough! Then, the blood of these Christian martyrs must not be in vain. Remember, like the blood of Cain, they would be crying against the murderers and the nation until justice is done.

For the attackers, you are embarking on a project that is impossible to achieve. Go and read the church history. All attempts ever made to annihilate Christianity have always ended in futility. And why? You cannot successfully fight against your creator. Jesus said that He will build His church and the gates of hell will NEVER prevail against it. The church will always mysteriously expand and prosper even at the face of persecution. True! So, I advise you and your sponsors within and without the country to keep down your arms against God and His people and embrace the gospel. Stop kicking against the STONE!

And for the church, we must not be discouraged. The word of God said that we should not fear those who can only destroy the body, but can not touch the soul. In fact, it said that we should rejoice in tribulation, for it is an indication that we belong to Christ and that the gospel is making the expected impact. The enemy -Satan is just reacting out of frustration. This is a time for us to rededicate of lives and service to God. Though, we must adopt the Nehemiah strategy now. As he and his team were re-building the ruined walls and city of Jerusalem, they also were well-prepared to fully defend themselves against the enemies. And this successfully checked the opposition until the work was completed. Let us all pray that God will change the hearts of these enemies of the church, give us peace and prosper the gospel and the country in Jesus' name - Amen!

One Stroke of a Pen Could Mean Less Violence, More Vibrant ...

Jack Calhoun, director of the California Cities Gang Prevention Network and senior consultant to NLC?s Institute for Youth, Education and Families and the U.S. Department of Justice, wrote the following post on youth violence prevention legislation in California, which is cross-posted at Mr. Calhoun?s Hope Matters website at www.hopematters.org.

Assembly Bill (AB) 526 sits on the desk of California?s Governor Jerry Brown.? The bill, the first of its kind in the nation, would underscore the core principle that preventing violence and building communities that don?t produce violence requires the active involvement of all key community entities ? law enforcement, schools, business, the faith community, health, housing, child welfare and more.

Single interventions such as offering afterschool programs, locating Boys & Girls Clubs in mistrusting neighborhoods, and applying targeted enforcement can help, but they are insufficient in the absence of a broader, more strategic approach.? In most cases, municipalities that have crafted and implemented more comprehensive, citywide plans blending prevention, intervention, enforcement and reentry for returning prisoners can point to reductions in youth and gang violence and improvement in other indicators of safety and well-being.

Preparing, launching, and sustaining such a plan takes enormous political will and a proven capacity to write effective grant applications and secure funding from a wide variety of sources.? In carrying out their plans, city and county leaders draw upon numerous disparate funding streams to support a wide range of efforts such as family resource centers, early childhood education, mentoring, drug abuse prevention, community-oriented policing, and job training for returning prisoners. ?Yet while most of the funding exists to support the necessary range of efforts, much of it is trapped in fiscal silos, which makes it extremely difficult to pull together and activate a comprehensive community effort.?? California has identified roughly $2.2 billion located in several funding streams that can and should be applied to youth and gang violence prevention.?? But it can?t get where it is needed without AB 526 and support from the state level.

AB 526 enhances violence prevention work taking place at the local level ? in the communities and neighborhoods that need help in restoring or maintaining public safety ? making it easier to braid various funding sources into a comprehensive effort that fits the community?s needs.? It would require the newly-minted Board of State and Community Corrections to ??identify delinquency and gang initiatives and prevention grant funds and programs for the purpose of consolidating those grant funds?moving toward a unified single delinquency intervention and prevention grant application??? And it will produce better results while costing the state no additional funding.

Underneath AB 526 lies a commitment to community-wide solutions, engagement of local leaders, and streamlined funding from the state level that will generate efficiency, effective coordination, and increased in-kind engagement of the community?s own resources.

Persistent violence leads to fear, citizen isolation and blame. ??It?s the fault of the police?it?s the parents? fault?it?s violence in the media,? some say as they grasp for answers. ?Perceived single causes of violence often lead to single interventions ? usually by law enforcement ? that struggle and often fail to address a multi-faceted problem.? But law enforcement cannot help beleaguered parents parent, conduct afterschool programs, provide jobs and job training, or mobilize neighborhoods for action. The causes of crime are problems of the community.? The whole community must do the work.? Every element of the community can and must play a role.

Abraham Heschel, one of the 20th century?s leading theologians, said, ?In a free society, some are guilty, but ALL are responsible.?? AB 526 helps California?s communities fully utilize their talents, coordinate their efforts, and allocate state funds to address the local conditions that have generated community safety problems ? building prevention, intervention, enforcement, and reentry into the fabric of communities.? That?s what really lies under this revolutionary bill, AB 526.

We eagerly await Governor Brown?s signature.

Doctor: Surgery stabilizes Tulane player's spine

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? Tulane football player Devon Walker's fractured spine was stabilized in a three-hour surgery Sunday, though it's too soon to tell whether he will be paralyzed from the injury he suffered while making a tackle, the team's doctor said.

Dr. Greg Stewart, Tulane University's director of sports medicine, said Walker was in stable condition and was expected to stay in the intensive care until of St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa for the next few days.

"These kind of injuries take 24, 48, sometimes 72 hours to fully declare themselves," Stewart said before the surgery. "We don't know what the long-term implications and outcomes are going to be."

Stewart said he was with Walker on the field, in the ambulance and at the hospital on Saturday. He said Walker was put into a cervical collar and couldn't see much of what was happening, so Stewart explained what was going on. Walker was talking with doctors as he was being treated, Stewart said.

Walker's parents had traveled to Oklahoma to be with their son, and they were "doing as well as can be expected," Stewart said.

"They're like the rest of us ? hopeful and prayerful."

Stewart was back in New Orleans on Sunday, as were Walker's teammates. He said Tulane's athletic director and the football team's trainer remained in Oklahoma with Walker.

Walker's injury occurred on the final play of the first half, hours after Tulane opened the Conference USA portion of its schedule against Tulsa. Tulsa was leading 35-3 and facing a fourth-and-2 with the ball at the 33-yard line on Saturday when the Golden Hurricane called timeout. Tulane then called timeout.

When play resumed, Tulsa quarterback Cody Green tossed a short pass to Willie Carter, who caught it at about the 28, and turned upfield. He was tackled around the 17-yard line, with defensive tackle Julius Warmsley and Walker sandwiching him and apparently smashing their helmets together.

Medical personnel from both teams tended to Walker as he lay on the field. FOX Sports reported a hush went over the crowd at H.A. Chapman Stadium as Walker was attended to, and that several coaches were in tears as he was taken away in an ambulance. Spectators bowed their heads as someone on the field led the stadium in prayer.

Dr. Buddy Savoie said during a postgame news conference that Walker never completely lost consciousness and was breathing on his own.

"He was stable when we transported him," Savoie said. "I do not think, based on the information we have, his life was ever in danger."

Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology. His brother, Raynard, told The Associated Press on Saturday that their mother was watching the game on television when her son was injured.

Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said after the 45-10 loss that while Walker was on the field, Johnson told Walker that he was praying for him and that help was on the way.

He said the mood among players was somber and called the day his most difficult ever.

"It was tremendous that they finished the game, as I thought about just saying 'Hey look, let's not do anything else. Let's just get on the road and go.'"

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) September 06, 2012

Search engine optimization (SEO) has been important to the internet marketing world for a long time, as it increases the visibility of a website on the search engines results page. According to Digital Influence Index, 90% of consumers use search engines to make purchasing decisions. This new statistic shows just how necessary this service is to local businesses, which is why the need for SEO in Cleveland has increased since the release of this statistic. If 90% of consumers use search engines when deciding what to buy, how many of those may be potential customers for Cleveland businesses?

Search engine optimization allows companies to rank higher in the search engine results pages, thus making them more visible to this 90% of search engine using consumers. There are many internet marketing techniques to help companies rank at the top of the results pages, but it is important to first understand the overall visibility a company may have online. From establishing a brand identity to engaging their clients via social media, visibility is an important part of achieving success on the internet. If no one if aware of a website, no one will visit it, and the website owner cannot make money. For this reason, it is crucial to determine visibility.

The importance of search engine optimization Cleveland is seen in the need for visibility. Visibility measures something RCBryan & Associates calls web presence. The new statistic on search engine usage for consumers proves the importance of web presence as search engine results pages have rankings, and the higher a website ranks the sooner it will be seen by the consumer. Because of the new statistic, RCBryan & Associates has released a web presence report that allows business owners to input information and find out how visible their website is online.

Through a Google grading system, RCBryan & Associates web presence report allows website owners to determine the visibility of their website, so they can determine if they need to use SEO to rank higher. Like the many Cleveland businesses that need search engine optimization after the release of the search engine usage statistic, many other companies may have questions about their visibility. The Progressive Catholic Voice: Homosexual Relationships ...

.
By Bill Hunt

The controversy over the moral status of homosexual relationships is tearing the churches apart. Whole regions of the worldwide Anglican Communion are threatening to withdraw over the ordination of openly gay or lesbian priests and bishops. (i)? Protestant synods have put pastors on trial for having homosexual partners. (ii)? Priests refuse communion to people just for sympathizing with gay Catholics, (iii) and the Vatican has provoked a debate over whether homosexual persons are ?intrinsically disordered.? (iv)? The issue of legal recognition of gay marriage crosses denominational lines and causes divisions within congregations.

The main reason that many Christians see homosexual relationships as problematic is that they are sincerely convinced that homosexual activity is gravely immoral. They contend that the biblical condemnation of homosexual activity continues to bind all Christians.

It is important to understand that these Christians are taking a principled stance. Many oppose discrimination against lesbian and gay individuals in secular employment and public accommodations. (v)? However, since they believe that homosexual activity is sinful, they contend that it is not permissible for their leaders to be lesbian or gay. Moreover, since in their eyes homosexual activity is against the natural law, they see secular recognition of gay marriage as destructive to the fabric of society.

What stance should those who support civil rights for lesbian and gay persons, including legal marriage, take? Should they concede that all forms of homosexual activity are immoral but that for the greater good in a pluralistic society gay and lesbian persons should be allowed to enter into same sex unions? Or, should they argue that committed, adult, consensual, loving relationships are holy and good and deserving of societal recognition and church blessing? If the latter, how does one deal with the biblical condemnations?

In my estimation, it comes down to looking at Christian moral teaching, including the teaching in passages from the Bible, in a developmental perspective. This means looking at scriptural passages in their historical and cultural context and taking into account developments in the intervening millennia. It means considering the taken-for-granted presuppositions of the biblical era and examining them in the light of subsequent discoveries. We have to ask why the biblical authors condemned homosexual activity and see if those reasons still apply.

The Biblical Condemnation

Although it is restricted to male homosexual activity, it is important to understand the full force of the biblical condemnation. Leviticus 18.22 states: ?You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.? Leviticus 20.13 repeats: ?If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.?

These passages come from the Torah, the core of the Hebrew Bible and thus carry particular authority. Moreover, the prohibition is on a par with each of the Ten Commandments (except for coveting) insofar as it carries the sanction of the death penalty. (vi)

It is true that Christians have set aside many condemnations of the Torah, including some of the Ten Commandments, because they are not repeated in the New Testament. But, that is not the case here. Even though Jesus does not repeat the condemnation (and thus it has no ?dominical warrant?), in Romans 1.26-27 St. Paul reiterates the Levitical prohibition: ?For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for this error.? (vii)

In addition to the argument from Scripture, these same Christians appeal to the Church?s natural law tradition. Although no Ecumenical Council ever condemned homosexual activity, they point to great thinkers like Thomas Aquinas (viii) and Dante (ix) who considered it to be ?contra naturam.? True, in recent years the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has distinguished between homosexual orientation and activity, (x) but it still condemns the latter.

This approach is summarized in section 2357 of the 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church: ?Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that 'homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.' They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.? (xi)

Some would say that this settles the issue. The Church can never change. However, there is a similar case where the teaching of the Church has clearly changed - a moral practice widely condemned in the Hebrew Bible, alluded to by Jesus himself in the Gospel of Luke, condemned by an ecumenical council, and banned for more than a millennium as contrary to the natural law. Yet, today the Church approves many forms of this practice. If the Church could change its condemnation on that issue, isn?t it possible, or even likely, that it could at least modify its blanket condemnation of all homosexual activity?

The Example of Usury (xii)

More than a dozen texts from all three parts of the Hebrew Bible (Law, Prophets, and Writings) condemn taking interest on a loan - not just exorbitant rates of interest, but any interest at all. The same Book of Leviticus that condemns male same sex activity also says: ?Do not extract interest from your [poor] countryman either in money or in kind . . . You are to lend him neither money at interest nor food at a profit.? (Leviticus 25.36-37) And Exodus 22.25 reads: ?If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you shall not deal with them as a creditor; you shall not exact interest from them.?

In four texts within a few chapters the prophet Ezekiel praises the person who does not take either advance or accrued interest and condemns the one who does so. (18.8, 13, 17; 22.12) The Psalmist states that those ?who do not lend money at interest? are among those who shall be admitted to the worshiping congregation. (Psalm 15.5)

For more than a millennium, theologians appealed to Luke 6.35 (?Lend expecting nothing back?) as an indication that Jesus himself condemned usury. (xiii)? Moreover, both the Jewish and the Christian traditions condemned usury as against the natural law. Both St Thomas Aquinas (xiv) and Dante (xv) felt that way. Even the ecumenical Council of Vienne (1312) condemned usury. (xvi)

Why did prophets and theologians, councils and bishops condemn usury for so many centuries? There were three main reasons. First, in an overwhelmingly agrarian society where coinage was scarce, there was a strong bias against merchants and trade. Merchants had a reputation for driving hard bargains and taking advantage of peasants in sales. A merchant was also suspect because while traveling about the countryside he was often away from home at night. Thus, he was unable to guard the virtue of his wife and daughters, as an honorable man should.

Second, ancient Israelites saw charging interest on a loan as taking advantage of a desperately poor person. Interest rates of fifty percent per year were common. (xvii) All too often, borrowing started a spiral of debt leading to the peasant?s loss of his land.

Finally, ancient Israelites understood money to be only an inert indicator of value with no use other than to provide a means of exchange. (xviii) If one lent someone a cow that produced milk, one could charge that person for the use of that cow. But, money didn?t produce anything; it had no use. So, to charge interest was to go against the nature of money and treat it as though it had a use. Hence, the term ?usury? and the contention that charging interest was against the natural law.

As Europe emerged from the Dark Ages, commerce increased, paper money became much more common, and the attitude toward merchants changed. Cities prospered from trade and commerce, and merchants were often considered benefactors and elected to public office.

Also, it became increasingly evident that money could stand for productive assets like cargo on a sea voyage. A loan with interest could actually help a merchant finance an enterprise or lift a person out of poverty. Money did have uses after all - and good ones. As the awareness of the legitimate uses of money grew, the condemnation of charging any interest changed to the condemnation of charging excessive interest to take advantage of the poor. Hence today, our condemnation of usurious interest on a loan.

The point is that the cultural understanding of money, which lay under the prohibition of charging any interest at all, had changed. With it changed the absolute condemnation of usury in any form and the permission of usury in some forms.

One must ask: Is a similar development going on with respect to homosexual activity? What happens if we delve even deeper into the biblical texts and ask: Why did the biblical authors condemn all forms of homosexual activity?

Another Look: Honor, Reproductivity, and Purity (xix)

Biblical studies over the last century or so have clarified the basic underlying rationale for the condemnation of same sex sexual activity in the context of ancient Israelite society and its core social values.

In the ancient society from which the Bible emerged the supreme value was honor - public esteem enjoyed by a person or group. (xx) ? Honor was primarily a male attribute. Ancient biblical society was patriarchal, and it was taken for granted that men were superior to women. Honor was also visible, concrete, and tangible - even spatial. The honorable man controlled all the important enclosures: his city, his home, the wombs of his women, and his own body. A man lost honor or was shamed when someone penetrated these spaces against his will or wrested them from his control.

The second fundamental social value was reproductivity. (xxi)? In contemporary American society parents are proud if their children surpass them in education, wealth, or success. Not so in ancient Israelite society. It was considered shameful for a man to rise above the status of his father. To surpass one?s father was to dishonor one?s father. A man?s role was to reproduce his father by begetting and raising sons to carry on his father's name. He began this project by planting his ?seed? in the hopefully fruitful ?soil? of his wife?s womb.

The third core value was purity (xxii) (also known as cleanliness or holiness) in the sense of being separate or apart. The leaders of Israel were convinced that idolatry had led to the destruction of Jerusalem (586 BCE) and the subsequent Babylonian Exile. The restored nation, therefore, had to be pure of any trace of idolatry and any practices associated with the idolatrous peoples surrounding them. Images of God or the gods were forbidden, of course, but so were practices thought to be associated with idolatry.

Israelite purity also involved culturally conditioned decisions about what was appropriate. Water creatures should have fins and scales, making crawfish and shrimp unclean. One shouldn?t weave a fabric from two kinds of thread, or sow two kinds of seeds in the same field. Animals with cloven hooves should chew their cud, thus making swine unclean. Blood should stay in its place under the skin, so bloody sores that pierced the skin were impure or unclean.

Likewise males, whether animal or human, should mate with females. Moreover, heterosexual intercourse was considered unnatural in any position other than face to face with the male on top. (This may well be what Paul is referring to in Romans 1.26 when he says: ?Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural . . . .? Almost certainly Paul is not referring to lesbian relationships.)

Given this male-dominated culture of honor, reproductivity, and purity, it is not hard to see why the ancient Israelites condemned same sex sexual activity. For a man to be penetrated by another man was considered a violent invasion of his most personal space. It was a loss of honor because he had been reduced to the status of a woman. Male homosexual activity was also a violation of the value of reproductivity. It made no sense to try to reproduce one?s father by sowing seed in a barren field. Finally, it was unclean or impure because it led to confusion of male and female roles and was associated with the practice of pagans.

Questions Raised by the Behavior of Jesus

Although the gospel writers do not directly refer to homosexual activity, they do present a picture of Jesus that calls into question the cultural presuppositions that led to the biblical prohibition. Let?s take these core social values in reverse order.

The Gospels relate the conflict of Jesus with Jewish authorities over matters of purity or cleanliness. Jesus instructs the disciples who have been sent out two by two to ?remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide . . .? (Luke 10. 8) In other words, they were to eat what was put before them and not ask questions about the purity of the food. In John?s Gospel Jesus asks the Samaritan woman for a drink even though ?Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.? (John 4.9) Mark depicts Jesus as healing an impure leper by touching the man. (Mark 1.41) In the eyes of his contemporaries this would have rendered Jesus impure.

In the wake of the successful mission to Israelites in the Diaspora and later to gentiles, most, if not all, of the purity rules were abandoned. Even the prohibitions of the so-called Council of Jerusalem do not seem to have been absolute. (Acts 15.28-29) For example, Paul allows eating food sacrificed to idols. (See 1 Corinthians 8.)

Jesus also radically undermined the value of reproductivity. Nowhere in the canonical Gospels does Jesus mention his earthly father. He abandons his home and his inherited social status as a construction wood worker to become a preacher who moved about from place to place. Jesus is at odds with his extended family (See Mark 6.1-6.), and he instructs his followers to turn their backs on the most sacred family obligations for the sake of the Kingdom. (See, for example, Matthew 8.21-22.) Jesus appears to have been unmarried, or at least to have had no son of his own to carry on his father's name. Nowhere in the Gospels does he encourage his followers to have children.

Jesus undercut the rigid distinction between the sexes that was so much a part of male honor at his time. There were women among his disciples and friends. Jesus is portrayed in the Gospels as speaking with unrelated women in public; performing miracles on their behalf; and praising the wisdom of their responses. Women were the first witnesses of the resurrection.

In the church that sprang from the ministry of Jesus, women were initiated by the same ritual of baptism as men were; women assumed active leadership roles; and women participated fully in the highest expression of the liturgical/sacramental life of the church - the Eucharist.

The ultimate indication that it was not shameful for a man to act like a woman comes in the story related in John?s Gospel where Jesus washes the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper. Washing of feet was a job for a slave. However, ordinary peasants could not afford a slave, so the job fell to the least honorable person in the household, one of the women. (xxiii)? By depicting Jesus as washing his disciples? feet, John portrays Jesus as deliberately setting aside one of the main tenets of male honor and taking on a distinctly female role ? thus demolishing the predominant cultural rationale of his time for the prohibition of male same sex activity.

Conclusion

The biblical condemnation of male same sex sexual activity was based on ancient cultural presumptions of honor, reproductivity, and purity. The ministry and teaching of Jesus radically undercut those presuppositions. Today we no longer take it for granted that men are superior to women, that the main purpose of sexual activity is to beget male children to carry on one?s father?s name, or that all purity rules are mandatory.

What is the status of a moral condemnation when its cultural underpinnings have been removed? Given the ?Copernican? revolution in our understanding of human sexuality during the past century, and given the radically changed circumstances of our time, it seems that the blanket condemnation of every kind of homosexual activity goes too far.

Just as over the centuries the Church found a way to distinguish between different kinds of interest-taking, so also it seems that contemporary Christians are in a position to review the condemnation of homosexual activity found in the biblical passages and to distinguish violent, exploitative sexual activities from those that are loving, adult, and free. This enables us to see homosexual relationships in a positive light and even envisage same gender unions blessed by the Church.

(AP) ? The younger daughter of a British-Iraqi couple slain while vacationing in the French Alps has returned to Britain, while her badly wounded older sister has come out of an artificial coma, authorities said Sunday.

Four-year-old Zeena and 7-year-old Zaina survived a vicious shooting that killed their parents, Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli, as well as a still-unidentified older woman and a French man who apparently happened to be passing by on his bicycle.

French police have been scrambling to hunt down leads since Wednesday's rampage, while relatives of the couple arrived in France to take care of the girls. Authorities say they are probing whether an alleged financial dispute between Saad al-Hilli and his brother Zaid played a role, though the surviving brother has denied any conflict.

Eric Maillaud, the prosecutor for Annecy near where the shootings occurred, told The Associated Press in a text message that Zeena had returned to Britain along with two relatives.

The older daughter, Zaina, was shot in the shoulder and took violent blows to the head during the attack. She underwent two operations and had been placed in a medically induced coma. She has come out of the coma but remains on sedatives and cannot yet talk to investigators, Maillaud wrote Sunday.

Depending on what she remembers, the 7-year-old could prove crucial to the investigation.

Meanwhile, French and British police spent a second day searching the couple's U.K. home in Claygate, a suburb of London.

Surrey Police said the force is supplying resources from its major crime team, which works jointly with Sussex Police, as well as forensic officers, search teams and translators. The force said dozens of British officers are assisting with the French-led investigation but that the number fluctuates depending on needs.

Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli and the two other people killed were each shot twice in the head, along with suffering other wounds. Zeena survived unhurt by hiding under her mother's skirt as some 25 automatic-handgun rounds were fired at the family car.

Elis Welcome Two in Class of 2016 to the Tennis Court - Yale Bulldogs

September 9, 2012

Brown and Svenning to Join a Strong Upperclassmen Line-up

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The Yale men's tennis team, coming off a winning season, will add two highly accomplished players in the class of 2016 to its roster for the upcoming 2012-13 season.? The two newcomers bring two very different styles of play to the Bulldogs' squad: one is a steady baseliner while the other displays an aggressive baseline game.? Both, however, share the goal of helping Yale claim the Ivy League title.

The incoming players, one of whom hails from Sweden, will join a squad of 10 returning players that finished with a winning record (13-11) last season under the leadership of Alex Dorato, Cary Leeds Head Coach of Men's Tennis.? The team retains many of its top players, including senior captain Daniel Hoffman and classmates John Huang and Marc Powers, all of whom consistently played in the top three singles spots last season.? The team did, however, lose two seniors, 2011-12 captain?Erik Blumenkranz '12 and?Joel Samaha '12, who together formed a reliable doubles team.

Fortunately, the loss of these two standout alumni will be offset by the incoming freshmen, both of whom have achieved great success in both singles and doubles at the highest echelons of junior tennis.

Here is a closer look at the newest members of the Yale men's tennis team:

Jason Brown

Deerfield, IL

Deerfield High School

Was ranked in top 30 in the nation by tennisrecruiting.net by end of summer 2011 ...? Nearly pulled off huge upset in second round at Kalamazoo in 2011, extending the No. 2 seed to three sets ...? Fda standards Confirming For Less hazardous Proper care Stuff ...

Proper care equipment companies, equipment marketers, and in addition healthcare services are needed to post twelve-monthly reviews towards the Food(Fda standards) about the protection associated with healthcare systems or many other solutions. Of course this course of action can be frustrating and a lot of data collecting, mmorpgs and have a very outstanding effect about the overall health and fitness with the People healthcare system.Read listed here to determine the actual reason why Fda standards canceling pertaining to less dangerous these products is vital.

1. Even though Fda standards really does placed drug treatments and in addition healthcare systems by having a protection examination right before signing most of their launch available on the market, just a simple set out of any product is tested. Some problems might continue being undiscovered with the assessment couple of years and check only if this healthcare product is applied in a larger size. Files published basically by companies or basically by healthcare services could help this Administration get involved in time, right before excessive injury continues to be induced.

2. Personally determining each and every healthcare product is a virtually extremely hard task to do, perhaps for just a large organization for example the Fda standards. The particular manpower and the cost this Administration would have to possess buy to make this happen are usually ridiculous. The particular twelve-monthly reviews published basically by companies and in addition equipment subscribers profit the Administration to concentrate entirely directly on situations which may have been shown to be harmful cannot do this because waste time or cash directly on analyzing correctly secure healthcare equipment.

3. Files published basically by healthcare equipment companies and in addition marketers profit the Fda standards quit the production associated with particular, sometimes harmful, pieces of equipment towards the public. This may avoid men and women via getting damage or even shed most of their life. Get the job done equipment or remedy had been applied to people, this Fda standards continues to have to be able to restrict it?s utilization therefore hardly any supplementary injury may be induced.
