Women's High Blood Sugar Linked to Colorectal Cancer: Study (HealthDay)
WEDNESDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- There may be a link between high blood sugar levels and an increased risk of colorectal cancer in older women, a new study finds.
Researchers analyzed 12 years of data collected from 5,000 postmenopausal women in the U.S. Women's Health Initiative study. The women's fasting blood sugar (glucose) and insulin levels were measured at the start of the study and then several more times over the next dozen years.
During the study period, 81 of the women were diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
The researchers found that women with elevated glucose levels at the start of the study were more likely to develop colorectal cancer, and that those in the highest third of glucose levels were nearly twice as likely to develop colorectal cancer than those in the lowest third.
There was no association between insulin levels and colorectal cancer risk, according to the team led by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.
The study appears online Nov. 29 in the British Journal of Cancer.
Obesity -- which is usually accompanied by elevated blood levels of glucose and insulin -- is a known risk factor for colorectal cancer. It's long been believed that the increased risk of colorectal cancer associated with obesity is due to high insulin levels, but this study suggests it may be due to high glucose levels.
"The next challenge is to find the mechanism by which chronically elevated blood glucose levels may lead to colorectal cancer," lead author Geoffrey Kabat, a senior epidemiologist at Einstein, said in a medical college news release. "It's possible that elevated glucose levels are linked to increased blood levels of growth factors and inflammatory factors that spur the growth of intestinal polyps, some of which later develop into cancer."
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

McCready's ex says she's pushing luck over son (AP)
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? Country singer Mindy McCready is pushing her luck with the legal system by not following a judge's order to return her 5-year-old son to the care of her mother in Florida, her ex-boyfriend and father of the boy said Friday.
McCready said Thursday she would not bring her son back from Tennessee, despite violating a custody arrangement.
McCready took the boy during a recent visit at her father's Florida home, and a judge signed an order Thursday ordering authorities to take the boy into custody and return him. It's not yet clear whether the singer could face criminal charges.
"I'm doing all this to protect Zander, not stay out of trouble," McCready wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Thursday. "I don't think I should be in trouble for protecting my son in the first place."
McCready says she is in Tennessee and cannot travel because she's nearly seven months pregnant with twins.
The judge's order means law enforcement anywhere can pick up the boy and bring him back to Florida.
The boy's father, Billy McKnight, told the NBC "Today" show Friday he spoke on the phone with McCready and their boy after the judge's deadline expired.
"He did sound healthy and ok. He wasn't crying or scared," McKnight said about their son.
"I think she believes she has a case and doesn't realize she's pushing her luck on this one," he said.
McCready and her mother have had a long custody battle over the boy. The boy was living with McCready's mother, who was awarded guardianship in 2007. McCready says her son has suffered abuse at her mother's house; her mother, Gayle Inge, denies the abuse allegations.
"Once the child is located, we will pick him up and bring him back to Florida," said Terri Durdaller, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Children and Families. "Although these circumstances are unfortunate for a young child, his safety and well-being are our number one priority."
McCready provided a series of emails to the AP with Lee County Judge James Seals' ruling to return the boy.
"Mom has violated the court's custody order and we are simply restoring the child back into our custody," the judge wrote. "Nothing more. Nothing less. The court makes no judgment about whether Mom will or will not competently care for the child while in her custody. It only wants the child back where the court placed him."
McCready found fame in the mid-1990s and has lived a complicated life in recent years.
In August, she filed a libel suit against her mother and the National Enquirer's parent company, American Media Inc., over a story published in the tabloid newspaper that quoted Inge.
And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.
During the TV show "Celebrity Rehab 3" in 2010, McCready came off as a sympathetic figure, and host Dr. Drew Pinsky called her an angel in the season finale.

Two boys dead after shooting at Houston-area home (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? A woman and four children were shot and critically wounded on Wednesday in a Texas home, and the suspected killer was dead after apparently shooting himself in the head, police said.
The local school district in Bay City, Texas, described the incident on its Facebook site as a "terrible domestic family tragedy" that took place at a home near one of its schools. It said no students or staff were injured.
The children who were shot were airlifted to various regional hospitals in nearby Houston, Bay City Police Department spokesman Andrew Lewis said. The wounded woman was also taken to hospital and was undergoing surgery, he said.
Police said detectives were still trying to determine the relationship of the alleged shooter to the victims. They did not know the conditions of the wounded.

Siri-ously? Can we find a decent voice assistant for Android? (Appolicious)
Siri voice assistant alternatives are being marketed to Android devices with alarming regularity. Since the Siri technology was first embedded into iOS 5 on the new iPhone 4S (even though a Siri app had been available for some time), a number of Android developers have brought similar apps to Android. There?s also been a number of voice assistant apps that have been available for quite a while.
Google?s Android OS already has built-in voice commands. It may not be as personalized or sophisticated as Siri, or have captured the public?s imagination, but the technology has been around for a while. It can do things like search, call people, send text messages and so on. Still, it is a little devoid of personality and not always 100 percent accurate. So how do some of the new (and old) Siri alternatives for Android shape-up?
Does Cluzee have a clue?
Opinion within the Android Market, however, is much more critical. With just an average two-star rating from over 600 so far (including over 350 one-star rankings), clearly many Android users aren?t so convinced. Many user reviews claim that there?s definitely some potential here, but constant force-close problems and instability issues are evidently hampering things a bit. A Siri-killer it most certainly isn?t, but perhaps with a few more updates, things will get better.
The Skyvi?s the limit
There?s also Skyvi, and so far, this has been received a bit more positively. It?s certainly not perfect, but is at least respectable. One thing that is interesting is that a lot of folks seem to be having fun with Skyvi. The results aren?t always right, but heck, at least they?re getting a laugh or two out of it. Once again, it doesn?t appear to be quite as competent as Siri yet, but it?s still a viable alternative for Android users to to download for free.
Tried and tested
It?s encouraging to see some Siri-like apps making their way to Android. The thing is, for a while now, Android already had a bunch of decent voice-assistant apps prior to Siri stealing all the headlines. For example, Vlingo Voice Assistant has been out for well over a year, garnered over a million downloads already, and has an average of 4.3 stars from almost 30,000 reviews. If that isn?t proof that Android already has some great voice assistant apps, I?m not sure what is. Vlingo lets you call people, send SMS or email, voice dial, search the web, find local restaurants and much more. It?s always getting updated and continues to improve. Plus, you don?t need a brand new iPhone 4S to use it. Sure, it might not be as pretty or have the ?cool factor? of Siri, but if it gets the job done, that?s good enough.
So for now, maybe it?s better for Android users to steer away from some of the more recent Siri clones which are clearly trying to cash-in on the iOS assistant?s popularity, and stick to some of the apps which have already proven successful and are often updated. If you don?t like one, there?s probably another one you can download instead, and perhaps within a few months even Cluzee will match the functionality of its peers.
Whichever way you look it, Android users are siri-ously (sorry) spoiled for choice for when it comes to free voice assistant apps.
