Etihad gets clearance to buy Jet Airways stake | Buying Business ...

Indian authorities have given the green light to Etihad Airways buying a 24 per cent stake in Jet Airways.

Etihad agreed to take the shareholding in Jet in a ?248 million deal which was announced in April.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier already has minority stakes in Air Berlin, Aer Lingus, Air Seychelles and Virgin Australia. Etihad sees this strategy as an alternative to joining a traditional airline alliance.

India?s Foreign Investment Promotion Board approved Jet?s agreement with Etihad yesterday (July 29). It is the first deal of its kind since the country relaxed its policy on foreign ownership of its airlines.

Under new rules, introduced last year, foreign carriers can now own up to 49 per cent of an Indian airline.

Samsung, Lenovo eating Apple's lunch in China

FORTUNE -- "How Samsung is beating Apple in China," read the headline on the Reuters newswire Friday. The piece quoted Tim Cook high up describing China as a huge opportunity for Apple "over the arc of time."

"But time looks to be on the side of rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd," the story continued, cleverly using Cook's words against him and noting that Apple's revenue in Greater China fell 43% sequentially last quarter and 14% year over year.

"It's not totally clear why that occurred," Cook said on a conference call with analysts.

The Reuters piece -- written by Melanie Lee and Miyoung Kim from Seoul and Guangzhou, China -- would have you believe that the reason it occurred was as plain as the nose on Tim Cook's face: Samsung.

But data released the same day by IDC and Strategy Analytics tell a different story. It's not just Samsung that's eating Apple's lunch in China, it's LG, ZTE, Lenovo, Alcatel, Huawei and others too small and numerous to name in charts of the world's top smartphone vendors.

Although Samsung continues to lead the world in the number of smartphones shipped -- 72.4 million in the June quarter, according to IDC, more than double Apple's (AAPL) 31.2 million -- Samsung is no longer the growth leader.

LG and ZTE's shipments more than doubled year over year last quarter, albeit from a much smaller base than Samsung's. Others may have grown even faster, according to IDC's press release:

"Several vendors, including Alcatel and Huawei, had high double- and triple-digit growth rates in the second quarter for their Android-based offerings shipped to high-growth countries such as China and India. In 2Q13, these vendors from outside the Top 5 accounted for 44.8% of the overall shipment volume, up from 42.2% in the same quarter one year ago."

"The story is no longer Apple versus Samsung," Forrester's Bryan Wang, told the New York Times. "Going forward, they will both face similar challenges."

The Beautiful Sedation of the The Paul Taylor Dance Company ...

It was the first time I?d seen Paul Taylor Dance Company live. It?s simply never worked with my schedule to be there. (Last year when they were performing at ADF I was watching the world?s greatest tap dancers in Chicago.) I?ve heard the company recommended as a great introduction to modern dance, especially for those who already have an appreciation for ballet. Since ballet is my first love, I circled the date for Paul Taylor Dance Company at the American Dance Festival on my calendar this year.

I could see almost as soon as the first piece started ? it was Perpetual Dawn ? that the things I?d heard about them were true. The dancers moved lifted and lengthened, like in ballet; they swept across the stage landing lightly, toes first, like in ballet; they did small and fast footwork and partnered with lifts and leaps, like in ballet. The production quality in terms of lighting and dancers? preparation and expectation also seemed on par with a major world class ballet company. I understand that Paul Taylor Dance Company is a major world class dance company in its own right, but I want to distinguish them from other modern dance companies, most of which have none of these characteristics.

Perpetual Dawn had a rustic charm with smoky pastels against earth tones and a celebratory joyousness that reminded me of the first act of Giselle or any other peasant scene in a ballet. The music from the Dresden Concerti by Johann David Heinichen, a grand harpsichord Baroque piece, contributed to the ?wind comes sweeping down the plain? peasant life feeling.

The second piece, Eventide, turns out to have been much the same, with music Suite for Viola and Orchestra and Hymn-Tune Prelude by Vaughan Williams, strings still sweeping, but with less wind. Most of the visual patterns were created using pairs of dancers, as in the first, and this one had a loose story of love and memories. The dancers were as beautiful and composed as ever, and the colors on stage were striking and vibrantly highlighted the dancers, but I began to yawn half-way through.

The final piece of the evening, Arden Court, with music from several symphonies of William Boyce, was the most energetic and modern of the program. The clean lines and flawless technique continued with the addition of more acrobatic feats and humor.

I could see why the Paul Taylor Dance Company is one of the most highly respected and sought-after ensembles in the world. Everything was flawless, from the picturesque costumes and lighting, to the exacting choreography, to the dancers? technical ability to execute the demanding selections. Still, I left feeling very even and nearly unaffected. Any of the three selections would have been great as part of a more diverse program, but together, they were degrees of the same thing. I grew weary of seeing dancers in pairs, and in spite of the leaping and acrobatics, I felt a monotony I shouldn?t expect from such an energetic performance. After Perpetual Dawn I was gradually deflated by an undynamic program. I walked out impressed by remarkable production quality but not feeling particularly anxious to return.

Here are a few pictures from Arden Court. See more at Arts View NC

2014 Recruits Who'll Win Awards in Their College Careers

It is rare to find high school cornerbacks who are great at press-man, off-man and zone coverage. Usually, a prep cornerback prospect is good at only one or two of the three main coverage techniques.

However, Tony Brown excels in all three, as the 6'0", 188-pound defensive back is one of the top players at his position in the 2014 class. Brown has good strength to reroute receivers at the line, loose hips to sit back on the perimeter, and the range to patrol deep thirds, halves and quarters of the field.

He is a versatile defensive back who can play on the boundary or field side at cornerback. He also possesses the skills to play either safety position. Winning the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best defensive back, is in Brown's future.?

'Conjuring' home residents can't conjure privacy

Movies

"The Conjuring," which topped last week's box office, was called "too scary" by some critics, who noted that the haunted-house film was given its R rating by the MPAA not for gore or language, but for pure fear potential. Now it's become a real-life horror for the family who lives in the Harrisville, R.I., home that inspired the movie.

Norma Sutcliffe, who said she is in her 60s, told Jim Baron of the Rhode Island newspaper The Woonsocket Call that fans of the film have been making pilgrimages to her home. The visits are disturbing her and her 70-year-old husband, who isn't in good health, she said.

Warner Bros.

"The Conjuring" is supposedly based on true events.

?We haven?t slept in days,? Sutcliffe told the newspaper. ?Because we wake up at 2 in the morning (and) there are people with flashlights in our yard.? People call on the phone and ask, 'Is this ?The Conjuring? house?' "

The Sutcliffes bought the house 25 years ago from the Perrons, the family depicted in the film, The Call reported. Andrea Perron wrote a trilogy of books about the supposed haunting of the house.

Sutcliffe said she received no money from the moviemakers and is angry they distributed photos of her house, making it easy for fans to find her address. A lawyer has told her she probably has no case to sue, and she said she doesn't want money, just to be left alone.

Sutcliffe told The Call she has seen the movie and doesn't think much of it. ?I just laughed at the whole thing," she told the paper. "I thought it was so ironically ridiculous. I thought it was an insult to the Perrons.?

Plea deal talks underway in Ohio kidnapping case

(AP Photo/Tony Dejak, File)

(AP) ? Prosecutors and attorneys for a man accused of kidnapping three women, holding them captive in his Cleveland home for about a decade and raping them repeatedly said they have entered into plea negotiations.

Both sides are scheduled to appear in court Friday morning for a final pretrial hearing for Ariel Castro, 53, and to update a Cuyahoga County judge on the talks.

Plea deal discussions are hinging on whether prosecutors will rule out the death penalty as the defense has demanded.

Castro, whose trial is scheduled to start Aug. 5, has pleaded not guilty to nearly 1,000 counts of kidnapping, rape and other crimes. His 576-page indictment includes two counts of aggravated murder for allegedly punching and starving one of the women until she miscarried.

Cleveland TV stations reported Thursday that a plea offer had been made. Defense attorney Jaye Schlachet declined to comment on the status of the talks but said offers and counteroffers would be expected.

"We're in the middle of plea negotiating, that's where we're at," he said. "Plea negotiations have been undertaken which, when there's plea offers and like any other negotiations, there's offers, there's negotiations, there's acceptance of offers, things of that sort."

Friday's hearing was a "final pretrial," Laura Creed, chief judicial staff attorney for the Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts, said in an email.

Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty's office had nothing to add beyond Wednesday's mention in court of plea negotiations, spokesman Joe Frolik said in an email.

There was no immediate comment from the legal team representing the three women.

Castro is accused of repeatedly restraining the women, sometimes chaining them to a pole in a basement, to a bedroom heater or inside a van. His indictment charges him with 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of felonious assault, three counts of child endangerment and one count of possessing criminal tools.

The women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were in their teens or early 20s. Each said she had accepted a ride from Castro.

Castro, a former school bus driver, has been jailed since his arrest on May 6 shortly after the women escaped to freedom.

Alibaba develops Smart TV OS, will use it to sell you things

Image

As much as we enjoyed the decade we spent vegging out in front of the shopping channel, we had hoped that the internet had put such days behind us. Not so, thanks to Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has developed its own Smart TV OS, separate to Aliyun, in the hope of pumping even more cash out of our wallets. Developed in collaboration with Wasu Media, the duo will launch a set-top box later in the year, and are in talks with companies like Cisco, Haier and Allwinner to produce compatible devices. While customers will be able to use smartphones to stream media and control their TVs, they'll probably be strong-armed into buying apps, shopping at the Alibaba-owned Juhuasuan and even making utility payments via the company's Alipay platform. Looks like we've got no choice but to finally buy that noiseless karaoke microphone we've been avoiding all these years.

Secret Movie Star Becomes Secret Musician | Dr. Joe Vitale's Secret ...

This article by Mathes Jones, which appears in the July 2013 issue of Austin All Natural magazine, is just too good not to share here with you. May it inspire you to follow your own dreams. Enjoy. ? joe

The Secret of a Secret Movie Star

From Homeless to Bestselling Author to Movie Star to Healing Musician

by Mathes Jones

There?s a natural order and sequence to life that, as humans, we all understand: Night follows day. Crawl before walking. Grapes into wine. Rags to riches. Author turns movie star turns #1 rated singer/songwriter. You know, that kind of thing.

Wait ? ?What?chu talkin? ?bout, Willis??

Actually, it?s who, not what, and the answer is Dr. Joe Vitale, the world?s first self-help singer-songwriter.

Latest singer-songwriter album

Latest singer-songwriter album

It?s hard to know what Vitale is best known for ? his 50+ books, his role in the hit movie, ?The Secret,? or the three Grammy winners he attracted for one of the six albums (The Healing Song) he?s produced in only two years.

Oh, did I mention that a mere three years ago he could only strum a few chords on the guitar and had never written a song ? much like Paul McCartney and John Lennon who were just learning songwriting after they became the Beatles?

That?s definitely not the nice, neat, orderly progression we expect of typical humans. But Vitale is hardly typical. He lives in a world that looks much different than most of ours. Essentially, he lives ? and sings ? what he teaches.

Most (but not all) of his books and writings are in the self-help field, and he?s landed a mass of bestsellers, including The Attractor Factor and Zero Limits. His forthcoming book, The Remembering Process, is currently being published by the world?s leading self-help publisher, Hay House, and is due out in April 2014. His co-author is his music producer, Daniel Barrett.

Three Grammy Winners Helped Create This Album

Three Grammy Winners Helped Create This Album

Vitale sounds like a man on fire with a mission, and it?s undoubtedly where his moniker, Mr. Fire, comes from (www.mrfire.com). The truth is he is on a mission, showing the world how to use music to tap into our mind and body?s natural ability to heal.

He calls it Healing Music.

While Vitale has a fascinating backstory of homeless to multi-millionaire (he?s no one-hit wonder), it?s his rise to stardom as a singer-songwriter that?s so compelling today.

Just how does a person succeed wildly in all these different genres?

First Singer-Songwriter Album

First Singer-Songwriter Album

Perhaps it?s because he?s a gifted communicator, a necessary and common denominator in books, film, and songwriting. Having spent a lifetime learning, applying, and sharing ancient wisdom and current technologies for self-improvement, he?s an expert in teaching people how to clear limiting beliefs that keep them from pursuing the things they really want.

But if you ask me, it?s something else that?s behind his success ? something Vitale refers to as divine inspiration.

Daniel Barrett, Joe Vitale, Dr. Joe Vitale, Glenn Fukunaga

The Band: Daniel Barrett, Joe Vitale, Dr. Joe Vitale, Glenn Fukunaga

?The whole point of personal growth is to clear any negative, limiting beliefs and gain access to your Divine self,? explains Vitale.? ?The great goal is to be so clear that when Divinity speaks through you, you don?t think, hesitate, or second guess about a call to take action. You just do it because there?s no interference from the conscious mind thinking, ?Oh, should I do it? Am I the one? Do I have the money? Do I have the experience? Do I have the time? What do my neighbors think? What do my parents think???

Vitale is an example of everything he teaches and sings in his songs. He takes his inspirations seriously. A believer in fast, immediate action, he?s famous for the saying, ?Money likes speed.? And this attitude has clearly worked for him ? taking him from zero to voted as #1 singer-songwriter by Reverbnation (in March 2013) in two years.

?When I decided to be a songwriter three years ago, I had thoughts like, ?I?m not a songwriter or singer. I can?t do that.? One of my teachers, famed singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard, asked me, ?Where?s the proof? Where?s the proof you can?t do that?? When he said that, I thought, ?My God, he?s right. I have no evidence whatsoever that I can?t sing, play the guitar, record music, or write my own song. There?s no evidence!??

Ray Wylie Hubbard Gave Songwriting Advice

Ray Wylie Hubbard Gave Songwriting Advice

?And I did, in fact, prove myself wrong. Little did I know in the beginning that inspiration would move through me so fast I?d not only complete my very first CD (Blue Healer) in just two months, but play as many as seven instruments for it ? including a very rare 1915 Gibson Harp Guitar.?

Given Vitale?s success as a self-help and spiritual teacher, both in his own life and in his work with others, it?s natural that this rock-blues loving guy would take the music world by storm ? bringing his thousands of fans into a new awareness of music?s healing power.

Music?s ability to heal is not a new concept. Its power has been storied in ancient text for thousands of years of recorded history, and today is well documented in medical research, which? Vitale describes in his new ebook, Healing Music: The Miraculous Power of Positive Music to Uplift, Relax, Transform, Awaken, and Rejuvenate.

Click image to get book free

Click image to get book free

Vitale brings music to a new level, one accessible to everyone, whether at home, working out, or traveling. Each album he writes, sings, and records has a certain emphasis and intention, a particular therapeutic use and result ? because, as he says, ?Intention is a key driver in healing of any kind, and it matters in music, too, from the person who created it to the person listening.?

Using certain types of beats and tempos known to affect the mind and body positively, along with positive messages to uplift a sagging spirit, his eclectic music style is as wide and varied as his range of success. We?re talking sheer passion, not elevator music ? everything from soothing to down home stomping fun, like his standout song, ?You Gotta? (on his recent singer-songwriter album, Sun will Rise).

Whoever said a little fun can?t hurt you was only partially right ? it can heal you. And Vitale?s music is proof of it. ?The idea behind healing music like mine is to allow the high vibration of inspired music to work on you. That?s the basis for the healing.?

Voted #1 Singer-Songwriter

Voted #1 Singer-Songwriter

Being the world?s first self-help, singer-songwriter has its privileges. He?s attracted some of the music industry?s finest, including Glenn Fukunaga (Robert Plant), Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Joe Vitale (Yes, of the same name) and Grammy award winner David Darling to perform and record with him. He?s also recorded two instrumental albums with accomplished Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon. It?s no longer a secret that like attracts like.

According to Vitale, becoming a self-help musician was simply the next step. He got the call, so to speak, and, true to form, acted quickly on that divine inspiration. And it?s this instinct that?s so inspiring to the rest of us.

With Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon

With Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon

When asked about his meteoric path, he says, ?In a world of all possibilities, there?s only one thing that can stop you?your own mind. Fortunately, you can change that. You can expand your own capacity to receive all the good things in life.?

From the outside looking in, Vitale does make quantum leaps look like natural evolution, gliding seamlessly from one successful reality to another.

Hmm, maybe there is something to that healing music.

Millions heard the news on Twitter, but a lucky handful were on hand to hear the announcement from the town crier. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to the future king of England at St. Mary's Hospital in London on Monday; and, Sports Illustrated writer Richard Deitsch asked his Twitter followers if they had a photo of the single best moment of their lives.

91% Fruitvale Station

All Critics (75) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (68) | Rotten (7)

Oscar Grant had friends, he had a sister and a mother and a grandmother, a girlfriend, a child. In concise measures, Fruitvale Station shows us these connections, these bonds.

Grant's ordinary life seems eminently dramatic even without its place in history.

Coogler could've settled for an enraging, full-throttle melodrama, designed to boil your blood from beginning to end. But "Fruitvale Station" is better, more heartbreaking, than that.

Fruitvale Station's wrenching power lies in the specificity of its storytelling and the ordinary human warmth of the world it conjures.

From the moment the arrest begins, the film is blunt and stunning, a completely absorbing, protracted nightmare.

Although Coogler surely wants his movie to serve as a weapon against racially charged police brutality, he's smart enough, and sensitive enough, to know that this is above all a human tragedy -- and not a political rallying point.

Even though we know where this dark road travels, the remarkable Fruitvale Station still manages to be both sorrowful and suspenseful while also celebrating a life only half-lived.

Writer/director Ryan Coogler's debut feature, Fruitvale Station, is one of those first films that announces that a major talent has hit the scene.

A gut-wrenching, emotional powerhouse of a film, politically and socially resonant while also standing on its own as a compelling and often-heartbreaking story

A viscerally wrenching experience, filled with foreboding from the first frame but stylistically naturalistic.

Strives only for an emotional response rather than an intellectual one.

Coogler's goal is clear - to put a human face on Grant, to make him recognizable.

Though the film's ending is no mystery, the personal details are what make this story so absorbing and so moving - more so precisely because his fate is already known.

It's a heartbreaking story that is so emotionally powerful that, while I may not want to see again, if it's on I won't be able to help but see it's tragic conclusion again.

"Fruitvale Station" will emotionally move you and simultaneously make you appreciate the filmmaking abilities of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan.

There's great soul to the work, which gives a complete picture of a young man's life in microcosmic form.

BART allowed Coogler to shoot on location, and the young filmmaker, working with a score of actors and a crowd of extras, shows more competence in placing the camera coherently than many action directors with access to multimillion-dollar budgets.

Coogler shows the storytelling maturity and restraint to keep the focus squarely on the characters, not so much on the actual act of bloodshed itself but the wounds exacted upon the direct victims, witnesses, and families alike.

'Fruitvale Station,' is one the most endearing and profound films that echoes the essence of humanity. Ryan Coogler's feature debut gives Michael B. Jordan a career making performance.

Many will respond to the film as a gut-level human interest piece, but it's as curtailed and nuance-free a character study as it is a political polemic.

The closeness of family and the feeling of community comes across as genuine in every scene...

Morocco: Civil society calls for reintroducing Atlas lions to their ...

Casablanca, June 30, 2013

Moroccan civil society has been mobilized recently in support of the kingdom?s mountain lions, wrote La Vie Eco on Saturday.

Allegedly, a petition has been circulating on the internet calling for the reintroduction of the atlas lions to their natural environment, which is Morocco?s Atlas mountains.

Today, the Atlas Lions are one of the nearly extinct species in the kingdom. There are only 90 specimens in captivity in zoos, including 35 lions in Rabat.

Considerably larger than its African cousin, the Atlas lion initially lived in the Moroccan Atlas mountains. Some specimens were saved thanks to Hassan II Royal Fauverie.

Hence, civil society is calling for the creation of a natural reserve for the Atlas lions similar to those established for the less endangered animals, including tigers, elephants and other species.

The Moroccan Ministry of Water and Forests had already raised the matter in 2000, with the growing awareness of the danger threatening this species.

The reintroduction of the Atlas lions in their natural sphere is deemed a long-term project that would necessitate both significant human and financial efforts to achieve it.

A protected area of 10,000 hectares has allegedly been defined in a sparsely populated area in order to build this ambitious project.

WHITE HOUSE NOTEBOOK: Tutu welcomes Obama 'home'

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) ? Retired archbishop Desmond Tutu locked eyes with President Barack Obama on Sunday in an emotional moment between two men who have been pioneers for racial progress a world apart.

Tutu greeted Obama with a "welcome home" to the continent where his father was born, and pleaded with the U.S. president to be a leader for peace, especially in the Middle East, who can make all Africans proud.

Obama was visiting the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre, an after-school program in a community where many young people are infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Obama praised Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who helped bring an end to South Africa's racist apartheid rule, as "an unrelenting champion of justice and human dignity."

Tutu then spoke of Obama's re-election last fall as America's first African-American president. "You don't know what you did for our psyche," Tutu said. "You won, and we won."

"Your success is our success. Your failure, whether you like it or not, is our failure," Tutu said, reaching out to touch Obama's arm. Obama chuckled and threw up his arms as if acknowledging his fate.

"We want you to be known as having brought peace to the world, especially to have brought an end to the anguish of all in the Middle East," Tutu said. "We pray that you will be known as having brought peace in all of these places where there is strife. You have brought peace and no need for the Guantanamo Bay detention center" in Cuba, where the U.S. has detained dozens of suspected terrorists.

In a diplomatic tour full of scripted formality, the 81-year-old archbishop spoke so slowly and passionately that many in the room who work at the center or the White House were moved to tears. "We are proud of you. You belong to us," Tutu concluded.

Obama also may have appreciated such affirming words at a time when he seems to be under constant criticism at home. Obama rose and helped Tutu to his feet, and the two heartily embraced, with the click of media cameras the only sound in the room.

___

Obama gave lessons in stage performance to an aspiring teenage rapper after meeting 15-year-old Aviwe Mtongana, who was making music on a Tutu center computer.

The boy identified himself as a rapper and Obama urged the boy, also known as Katmeister, to "give me a little sample."

Mtongana initially demurred, then pushed back his chair and stood up. A grinning Obama said Mtongana must need to "loosen up," and the president demonstrated stretching out his arms like a boxer preparing for a fight.

Mtongana let loose a brief rhyme. "Hell on Earth, what you gonna do? Watching TV, you watching Scooby-Doo. Saying the punch line, he's not cool," he began.

"Heading to the goal with something failing, now you face the hardest living," Mtongana continued. "Getting out there is not pimping, the real way is through rapping."

Obama declared the performance "outstanding," but offered a word of advice.

"You've got to drop the mic," he said, holding his arm out to the side and opening his fist as though he were dropping a microphone on the ground.

___

Obama prematurely aged his daughter Malia by a few days.

He said in a speech at the University of Cape Town that she is "now 15." But the fact of the matter is Malia doesn't turn 15 until Thursday. She was born on the Fourth of July.

Malia might have appreciated the premature aging, since most teens cannot wait to grow up.

___

Before the speech, Obama and his family toured the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela spent nearly 20 years as a political prisoner before he was released and elected South Africa's first black president.

Obama spent more than 20 minutes inside the tiny cell that housed Mandela for 18 years.

After his family left, Obama remained alone inside the cell that now is a monument to Mandela, a man Obama says is a "personal hero." The president gazed out of a large window with thick white bars. He picked up and examined a small, metal bowl that sat on a small, wooden table before turning his attention to a thin mat with pillows and a brown blanket, on which Mandela would have slept.

Obama visited Robben Island in 2006, when he was a U.S. senator, but the tour was a first for his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"There was something different about bringing my children," Obama said, opening his speech at the university. He said they now appreciate more the sacrifices that Mandela and others had made for freedom. "I knew this was an experience they would never forget," Obama said.

___

Before leaving the island, Obama signed the prison's guest book with a message likely to be seen by the countless visitors who will follow him.

The large book sat open on a simple wooden desk, in a courtyard rimmed by a high concrete wall topped with barbed wire. U.S. Secret Service agents made use of an old guard tower, staffing it with sharpshooters who scanned the horizon with binoculars. The prison was closed to the public for Obama's visit.

Obama, casually dressed in a blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves and khaki slacks, leaned over the desk and wrote for several minutes with first lady Michelle Obama at his side. She signed her name, too.

"On behalf of our family, we're deeply humbled to stand where men of such courage faced down injustice and refused to yield," the president wrote. "The world is grateful for the heroes of Robben Island, who remind us that no shackles or cells can match the strength of the human spirit."

Obama copied his message from a piece of typewritten paper an aide had set down on the book before the president came into the courtyard. He wrote slowly in cursive, apparently not wanting to make a mistake. He left behind the black marker he used to write the message, as well as the note he worked from.

NCAA HOOPS: A Season's Worth of Experience Aids Villanova's Ryan Arcidiacono

The offseason for Villanova freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono has been a busy one. In April when the Big 5 Basketball awards were handed out, Arcidiacono was named Rookie of the Year. Arcidiacono averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 assists and 2.1 rebounds to help the Wildcats reach the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years.

A recent trip to USA Basketball's U19 Training Camp in Colorado Springs was, for the Langhorne resident, a return engagement of sorts. One year ago, he was part of a group of athletes competing for a slot on the national team's U18 squad.

When he reached USA Basketball's headquarters this time, though, Arcidiacono had something going for him he did not possess last year: a season of competitive basketball to draw upon. And that put him much more in the flow than he was last year less than six months removed from back surgery.

"Having a college season under my belt is big," says Arcidiacono, who was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie squad in a 2012-13 season in which he started all 34 games for a Villanova unit that earned an NCAA Tournament bid with a 20-14 record.

"Coming into last summer I was just trying to play my game and get back into shape somewhat. I didn't get into shape until October."

In the spring of 2012, Arcidiacono was in the midst of the slow road back from December 2011 surgery that had kept him sidelined from playing for Neshaminy High School as a senior. And though there were no physical setbacks or further pain after the surgery, there was the small matter of rust and game conditioning to address. It was a laborious process that was in its early stages when USA Basketball candidates assembled last June in Colorado Springs. Arcidiacono was not selected to the team at the training camp.

"Last year was a great experience for me because I was rusty," he recalls. "I really didn't play well the first three workouts we had out there. But after that I thought I played pretty well. It didn't work out for me then but it was an honor to be invited and it's an honor to be asked back this year."

Arcidiacono was one of 24 athletes who battled for a spot on the 12-man roster for the USA team that will represent the USA at the U19 World Championship in Prague. Training camp got underway in Colorado Springs on June 14. The team is coached by Florida's Billy Donovan.

Awaiting the opportunity, Arcidiacono is on campus at Villanova attending summer school and working out with his teammates. The 6-3 guard is one of two returning team captains - senior James Bell is the other - and expects to assume more of a leadership role following the graduation of forward Mouphtaou Yarou.

"One of the things that Coach has talked to me about working on this offseason is taking more of a leadership role," states Arcidiacono. Continued...

Yarou offered a glowing example of just how valuable an on-court leader can be to a young team.

"Mouph was just awesome last year," states Arcidiacono. "He's a great person and is always just really positive. No matter what happened, he always had a great attitude. We're going to miss him on the court with rebounding, defense and off the court as a great leader."

On a young roster with a vacancy at point guard, Arcidiacono was not afforded a soft landing at the college level. As the Wildcats' primary ball-handler, the product of Neshaminy High School was tested from the start and never cracked. He started all 34 games and logged the most minutes of any Wildcat - an average of 34.0 mpg. In addition, he was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on three different occasions and averaged 11.9 ppg.

Perhaps just as significant were the big baskets he made along the way. Among the more memorable of those came in wins over Marshall (25 points), St. John's (a season high 32 points) and in the upset triumph over No. 5 Syracuse on Jan. 26 - his corner 3-pointer after Yarou collected an offensive rebound that tied the game and forced overtime. The `Cats eventually prevailed 75-71.

Arcidiacono was less concerned with those kind of numbers than the simple fact that he carried a heavy load with no setbacks and was part of a team that returned to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.

"I thought it was a good year," he says of '12-13. "For me, it was just good to get back on the court. That was what I was most excited about. I got the chance to play for a local school that I had always wanted to go to. It was a success to me because we made strides all year and made it to the (NCAA) Tournament. Towards the end we really came together and we finished strong, even though we had a couple of losses there at the end."

One of the more promising elements of the success is that it was accomplished by a group that returns largely intact in '13-14. Yarou is the only one of the top seven Wildcats in minutes played who has moved on and Villanova adds the services of Dylan Ennis, who redshirted after transferring from Rice, along with new arrivals Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins and Darryl Reynolds to the equation.

"We had to get back to what Villanova Basketball was a few years ago and I thought we did it towards the end of the season," Arcidiacono states. "Teams knew what they were playing against when they played us. That's what we need to do this year - set the tone defensively, play hard, and play off of our defense to get some easy buckets."

The 2013-14 season remains off in the distance but the activity level around the Davis Center remains high. The Wildcats have been toiling diligently in workouts, lifting sessions and other elements of the nitty-gritty that can sometimes mean the difference between a pulsating victory or an excruciatingly painful loss in January.

Arcidiacono is fine-tuning a bit of his footwork and shooting mechanics this summer. Tinkering with technical aspects represent a welcome change from last summer, when the focus was merely on getting acclimated to the speed of the college game while scraping off the residue of an idle senior season at the high school level in 2011-12. In the meantime he is bonding with his new teammates and offering them any insight he can. He will be listed as only a sophomore next season but like Scottie Reynolds, Mike Nardi and Randy Foye before him, "Arch" benefitted from a unique freshman opportunity that introduced him to a range of on-court experiences.

In Colorado Springs he is likely to find another laboratory in which to hone his craft.

"The experience of being there last year does help," he says. "It also helps that I have a full season of college basketball under my belt. I'm just going to go out there to play Villanova Basketball and be the best player I can be."

One season is in the books at Villanova for Arcidiacono.

He plans to put the lessons learned from it to good use.

UPDATE: Following four training sessions involving 26 of America's top 19-and-under players, USA Basketball recently announced 16 finalists for the 2013 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Championship Team.

However when the roster will be pared down to 12 before the squad departs on June 18 before three days of training at the Washington Wizards practice facility in Washington, D.C., the Neshaminy basketball product was not among the 12 players selected.

The team, is coached by Florida's Billy Donovan.

"Getting down to 12 is the real hard part because in a lot of respects we easy could have kept 14-15," Donovan said in a statement.

As a freshman, Arcidiacono averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 assists and 2.1 rebounds with the Wildcats.

The 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship will be held June 24-July 6 in Prague, Czech Republic. The finalists, who must be 19-years-old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1994) and a U.S. citizen to be eligible for this team, were selected by the USA Basketball Men's Developmental National Team Committee.

Selected as one of 26 USA U19 finalists were Arcidiacono (Villanova University/Langhorne, Pa.); Damyean Dotson (University of Oregon/Houston, Texas); Michael Frazier (University of Florida/Tampa, Fla.); Marcus Georges-Hunt (Georgia Tech/College Park, Ga.); Aaron Gordon (Archbishop Mitty H.S./San Jose, Calif.); Jerami Grant (Syracuse University/Bowie, Md.); Montrezl Harrell (University of Louisville/Tarboro, N.C.); Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young H.S./Chicago, Ill.); Elfrid Payton (University of Louisiana at Lafayette/Gretna, La.); James Robinson (University of Pittsburgh/Mitchellville, Md.); Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State University/Flower Mound, Texas); Jarnell Stokes (University of Tennessee/Memphis, Tenn.); Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke University/Houston, Texas); Mike Tobey (University of Virginia/Monroe, N.Y.); Nigel Williams-Goss (Findlay Prep/Happy Valley, Ore.); and Justise Winslow (St. Johns H.S./Houston, Texas).

"We had 26 really, really good players and all of the guys made the selection very, very difficult," said USA U19 and University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan. "I think the things that stand out about this team is just the athleticism; the speed and quickness; the ability to defend and put pressure on people; and offensive rebound.
