Cameron Diaz Will Play Miss Hannigan In 'Annie.' Really?

There's a lot to be excited about regarding the upcoming remake of Annie. First of all, we're eager to hear what producers Jay-Z and Will Smith do with classic showtunes like "Tomorrow." (We've already heard what Jay-Z can do with "Hard Knock Life.") Then there's the cast: adorable young Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis in the title role, and Jamie Foxx as a modernized Daddy Warbucks. However, we're scratching our heads over the just-announced casting of comic villain Miss Hannigan. Cameron Diaz is talented, okay -- but do we really want to see her in a musical?

Death toll from west China's violence rises to 35

BEIJING (AP) ? The official death toll rose to 35 Friday from an outburst of violence that included knife attacks on police in a far-western region that has seen frequent clashes between China's Muslim minority Uighurs and the ethnic Han majority.

Initial reports said 27 people were killed Wednesday in a remote town in the Xinjiang region, with state-run media saying that knife-wielding assailants targeted police stations, a government building and a construction site ? all symbols of Han authority and influx in the region.

The updated death toll included some of the severely injured dying in the hospital. It also included 11 assailants shot dead in Lukqun township in Turpan prefecture, the state-run Xinhua News agency said. Two police officers were among the 24 people they killed, Xinhua said.

"This is a terrorist attack, there's no question about that," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Friday at a regular news briefing. "As to who masterminded it, local people are still investigating."

State news reports did not identify the ethnicity of the attackers, nor explain what may have caused the conflict in the Turkic-speaking region, where Uighurs have complained of suppression and discrimination by Han people. The report also said police captured four injured assailants.

The Wednesday violence ? described as a terrorist act by China's state media ? was one of the bloodiest incidents since unrest in the region's capital city of Urumqi killed nearly 200 in 2009.

Photos released in state media show scorched police cars and government buildings and victims lying on the ground ? presumably dead.

It was impossible to independently confirm the state-run media accounts. The Global Times said police set up many checkpoints along the 30-kilometer (19-mile) road to Lukqun and dissuaded reporters from traveling there due to safety concerns. It said heavy security has been necessary because some suspects remained on the run.

An official who only gave his family name of Bao and works at the news office for the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau said Friday he had no more information than in state media. Calls to the region's party propaganda office and the regional government's news office were not answered Friday.

Xinjiang (shihn-jeeahng) is home to a large population of minority Muslim Uighurs (WEE'-gurs) in a region that borders Central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan and has been the scene of numerous violent acts in recent years, including the riots in the capital four years ago.

Critics have attributed the violence, including Wednesday's deadly clashes, to Beijing's oppressive and discriminatory ethnicity policies. Many Uighurs complain that Beijing imposes tight restrictions on their religious and cultural life, barring children and women from attending mosques and discouraging fasting during the Muslim month of Ramadan, which starts this year in early July.

The Chinese government says all ethnic groups are treated equally and that the violence is terrorism with no connection to religion or ethnicity. It points to billions of dollars it has invested in modernizing Xinjiang, a strategically vital region with significant oil and gas deposits.

Beijing often accuses overseas Uighur activists of orchestrating violence and obscure militant groups sometimes take responsibility, with little or no evidence to prove claims on either side.

Information is tightly controlled in the region, which the Chinese government regards as highly sensitive and where it has imposed a heavy security presence to quell unrest. However, forces are spread thin across the vast territory and the response from authorities is often slow.

ANA says Dreamliner jet had problem with AC power supply

TOKYO (Reuters) - One of All Nippon Airways' 787 Dreamliner jets, made by Boeing Co, had a cockpit message saying that the aircraft might not be able to supply power for its air-conditioning system, the Japanese airline said on Thursday.

The issue was not related to the lithium ion battery problems that had grounded the jets for three months from mid-January, Ryosei Nomura, an ANA spokesman, said.

All Dreamliner jets are under the microscope after Boeing installed a re-designed battery system and they resumed flying. Last week, two United Airlines Dreamliner jets were diverted due to separate oil-related problems.

More than 100 passengers who were supposed to fly on the ANA jet from Tokyo to Frankfurt on Thursday ended up taking a different plane that departed nearly eight hours later than originally scheduled, Nomura said.

ANA fixed the problem by exchanging components of a computer that controls electricity supply to the air-conditioning system, said Shinsuke Satake, another company spokesman.

Testimony in Jackson case focuses on paparazzi

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Scrutiny by paparazzi has made it more difficult for the children of Michael Jackson to grieve for their dead father, a family cousin who serves as co-guardian of the singer's children told a jury on Thursday.

TJ Jackson said the three children don't like the attention, and he supports any legislative effort to curb photographers from pursuing images of the sons and daughters of celebrities.

"In my opinion, I know it's making everything harder for the kids to grieve and recover and progress," Jackson said.

The comments came as Jackson testified during a civil trial involving the death of the pop star about his relationship with his famous uncle and the singer's parenting of his children.

He cited remarks made Tuesday by Halle Berry in Sacramento as the Legislature considers a bill that would change the definition of harassment to include photographing or recording a child without the permission of a legal guardian.

Anyone convicted of a first offense could spend between 10 days and a year in jail.

TJ Jackson said he had to consider whether Michael Jackson's youngest son Blanket should attend martial arts classes on Tuesday because photographers would be interested in getting a shot of the 11-year-old on the fourth anniversary of his father's death.

TJ Jackson is Tito Jackson's son and a member of the musical group 3T with two of his brothers.

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

Pioneer's new SB-PS23W is a soundbar the way most people want it: A simple, relatively inexpensive way to make a television sound louder. In that way, it's cut from the same cloth as the fantastic AirPlay speakers the company made last year (actually, they've got the some LA-based designer). It wasn't the first AirPlay speaker, but its design made it a winner.

From what we just heard this $400 soundbar has a lot of the same potential for the basic soundbar market. The six-speaker array sits in a a handsome wooden enclosure that's larger than most. While that might not necessarily mesh with the "invisible" aesthetic most soundbars are going for, it gives the music some space to resonate. (The included wireless sub helps fill out the bottom-end nicely as well.) The sound of sweet guitars resonating in wood?just the way it should be.

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

How do movies sound? Well, see now, that's the thing?Pioneer wasn't demoing movies because the system is designed for stereo. That means you're not getting any fancy surround sound emulation. Pioneer reps said we're "three years away" from being able to do surround sound well from a soundbar. That's definitely not true, but at a $300 price point?surrrrre.

But the trade of of is simplicity and price. This new sound bar only takes two inputs?optical digital and RCA. So you'll need a separate hub?a TV will do!?to handle all your HDMI inputs.

Usual first impression disclaimer applies: I listened to this thing for a few minutes only, so we'll have to wait and see how it holds up against the cheap soundbars we reviewed last year.

Cloning mice: For the first time, a donor mouse has been cloned using a drop of peripheral blood from its tail

June 26, 2013 ? From obesity to substance abuse, from anxiety to cancer, genetically modified mice are used extensively in research as models of human disease. Researchers often spend years developing a strain of mouse with the exact genetic mutations necessary to model a particular human disorder. But what if that mouse, due to the mutations themselves or a simple twist of fate, was infertile?

Currently, two methods exist for perpetuating a valuable strain of mouse. If at least one of the remaining mice is male and possesses healthy germ cells, the best option is intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), an in vitro fertilization procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.

However, if the remaining mice cannot produce healthy germ cells, or if they are female, researchers must turn to cloning. Somatic-cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) produces cloned animals by replacing an oocyte's nucleus with that of an adult somatic cell. An early version of this process was used to produce Dolly the sheep in 1996.

Since then, SCNT techniques have continued to advance. Earlier this year, researchers at the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan, even devised a technique to avoid the diminishing returns of recloning the same cell; success rates increased from the standard three percent in first-generation clones to ten percent in first-generation and 14 percent in higher-generation clones.

The type of somatic cell used for this process is critical and depends largely on its efficiency in producing live clones, as well as its ease of access and readiness for experimental use. While cumulus cells, which surround oocytes in the ovarian follicle and after ovulation, are currently the preferred cell type, Drs. Satoshi Kamimura, Atsuo Ogura, and colleagues at the RIKEN BioResource Center in Tsukuba, Japan, questioned whether white blood cells (a.k.a., leukocytes) collected from an easily accessed site, such as a tail, would be effective donor cells. Such cells would allow for repeated sampling with minimal risk to the donor mouse.

There are five different types of white blood cells and, as expected, the researchers found that lymphocytes were the type that performed the most poorly: only 1.7 percent of embryos developed into offspring. The physically largest white blood cells, and thus the easiest to filter from the blood sample, were granulocytes and monocytes. The nuclei of these cells performed better, with 2.1 percent of the embryos surviving to term, compared to 2.7 percent for the preferred cell type, cumulus cells.

The granulocytes' performance was poorer than expected due to a much higher rate of fragmentation in early embryos (22.6 percent): twofold higher than that of lymphocyte cloning and fivefold higher than cumulus cell cloning. The researchers were unable to determine what could be causing the fragmentation and intend to perform further studies to improve the performance of granulocyte donor cells.

Although the blood cells tested did not surpass the success rate of cumulus cells in this study, the researchers have demonstrated, for the first time, that mice can be cloned using the nuclei of peripheral blood cells. These cells may be used for cloning immediately after collection with minimal risk to the donor, helping to generate genetic copies of mouse strains that cannot be preserved by other assisted reproduction techniques.

After Supreme Court Ruling, Senate to Hold Hearings on Voting Rights Act

171496702 16x9 608 After Supreme Court Ruling, Senate to Hold Hearings on Voting Rights ActPatrick Leahy

Now that the Supreme Court has kicked the Voting Rights Act over to Congress, Congress will take it up.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold hearings next month after the court on Tuesday invalidated the Voting Rights Act's coverage formula, which determines which voting districts must gain pre-approval from the Department of Justice for voting policy and procedure changes.

The court left standing Section 5, which requires states with histories of racial discrimination to seek such approval, only invalidating the formula that determines which districts fall under that provision. Congress last reauthorized the law in 2006.

Read more about the Supreme Court's landmark decision on voting rights.

Now, it's essentially up to Congress to re-write the formula.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced the Voting Rights Act hearings to Democratic senators at their weekly caucus luncheon, held about two and a half hours after the Supreme Court handed down its decision, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters.

The committee will likely hold "multiple" hearings, a committee aide told ABC News.

Reid criticized the ruling, saying there is "general displeasure" over it among Senate Democrats.

"This is a dark day for the Supreme Court," Reid said.

Use These Home Improvement Tips To Take Care Of Your Largest ...

A lot of people get intimidated when they have to do a home project by themselves. Armed with the right tools and information, you can take on any project. The information below can help you be successful with your home improvement projects.

To keep electric costs down while illuminating your yard, change out your regular porch light for one that has a motion sensor. You can still turn it on manually if need be, and you can also adjust sensitivity on some models.

You can use aluminum foil as a protective covering for certain surfaces before you paint. You should always be careful to avoid having aluminum foil come in contact with anything electrical. The foil protects while you paint and is much easier to work with than tape. Your cleanup will be simple! Allow the paint to fully dry prior to removing the foil.

TIP! Organize your garage using some clear boxes made of plastic and arranging your items by type and use. Even though the bins are transparent, it?s important to properly label them, too.

Just put some of this solution in a bucket to mop your floors easily. You will likely find that the build-up of dirt has been removed and that the floor will appear as new.

Locate your gas shutoff valve before beginning a project that involves your fireplace, kitchen appliances or anything else related to your gas line. Proceeding with extreme caution is essential in these situations. A fire could damage you and your efforts in any project.

The reasons for why you are replacing a lock determines whether you have to replace all or part of it. The locking action is accomplished by the cylinder. If you have lost your house key, you can change the cylinder without having to change whole lock. If you want to install an upgrade, then revamp the entire unit.

TIP! A homeowner should always hire a licensed contractor to do any home improvement work. No matter where it is that you currently reside, all contractors are required to have some sort of certification from your state.

Make sure the spaces in your home are well-designated prior to placing your home on the market. Buyers shouldn?t have to guess what a space is supposed to be; have appropriate furnishings and accessories in each room. Buyers are visual, and they often have a hard time imagining themselves in a space if it isn?t properly appointed. This can make selling a house easier.

You might have been under the impression that without professional help, it is hard to make home improvements. If you take the information that was in this article, you will likely be able to tackle at least some of the projects, without any help at all.
